California Strategies expands statewide expertise by adding veteran strategic communications, public affairs and political campaign expert
SACRAMENTO — California Strategies LLC, the state’s largest public-affairs consulting firm, is pleased to announce Matthew Klink (Matt) as the firm’s newest partner.
“Matt has successfully worked on high-profile communications efforts locally, throughout California, nationally and on the international level for decades,” commented company founder Bob White. “I am looking forward to working with Matt, who adds his experience and expertise to the firm’s extensive policy, political and communications efforts.”
At California Strategies, Matt will work for clients encompassing a range of industries and subjects, but particularly those companies, trade associations, non-profits which face challenging regulatory and fiscal issues. He will be based in Los Angeles but will work with clients throughout the state and with other California Strategies’ partners.
With more than 27 years of experience, Klink is an adept communicator skilled at crafting and implementing strategic campaign and crisis communication programs. He has substantial experience in integrating grassroots outreach and alliance development efforts to support lobbying activities. An award-winning writer, Klink has developed effective messaging and captivating copy to meet a variety of client needs, including targeted direct mail, speeches, brochures, op-eds, and other types of traditional, on-line and digital materials. Skilled at working with the news media, Matt has functioned as a spokesperson and primary media contact for a number of corporate clients and statewide initiative campaigns. He appears on national and local television news broadcasts on behalf of his clients and regularly offers political analysis and commentary.
Klink has worked on candidate and initiative campaigns at multiple levels of government, where he has performed a variety of roles that include general consulting, campaign management, media consulting, campaign spokesperson, direct mail design and production, and coalition building. Recently, Matt served as lead consultant in opposition to a controversial property tax measure (Measure EE) in the greater Los Angeles area. Outspent by more than 6:1 and facing widespread support from area politicians, Klink developed and implemented a highly targeted opposition campaign that held the initiative’s proponents to 46% of the vote (the initiative needed 66.7% to pass).
Matt’s past work experience includes a senior-level position as Director Government Affairs for Philip Morris International, based in Lausanne, Switzerland. He led a team that created and executed communications and stakeholder outreach programs on regulatory and fiscal issues in more than 35 countries on six continents.
