Senate Concurrent Resolution SCR 129 Designates Route 152 as the Rusty Areias Highway

California Senate Concurrent Resolution 129 (SCR 129), authored by Senator Cortese, designates a portion of State Highway Route 152 in Santa Clara County as the Rusty Areias Highway, honoring a long record of public service and leadership.

The resolution highlights Rusty Areias’s service in the California State Assembly, where he chaired major committees and built a bipartisan record that produced more than 100 bills signed into law. SCR 129 also recognizes his leadership in public safety, agriculture, parks, and transportation policy across California.

In the transportation arena, the measure specifically cites his role in advancing improvements to Highway 152 over Pacheco Pass, a critical route connecting the San Joaquin Valley and the southern Bay Area. The Legislature designates the segment in Santa Clara County from Cedar Creek (postmile R28.163) to the Sidehill Viaduct (postmile 31.656) as the Rusty Areias Highway.

SCR 129 requests that Caltrans determine the cost of appropriate signage and, upon receipt of non-state donations sufficient to cover that cost, install signs for the designation.

During committee testimony, supporters described Areias as a pragmatic public servant known for bringing people together and doing the difficult work needed to move major issues forward. The designation reflects both his legislative impact and his lasting contribution to California communities.

Resolution summary: The Senate and Assembly concurred in honoring Rusty Areias by naming this portion of Route 152 in recognition of a career defined by bipartisan problem-solving and service.
